My older daughter left for college in 2021; this is her 3rd year. I'd miss her more, except we "watch" things together & text while watching. We usually catch "The Good Doctor" together & even now we're watching the NASCAR race "together". I still miss her physical presence, tho...but was comforted by still having her little sister home...
...until...
This year my younger daughter - my "baby" - left for college! She actually likes to talk on the phone & we text each other frequently, but I still miss her horribly.
I miss them both horribly.
I miss watching movies with them. I miss our face-to-face chats. I miss them helping me make dinner. I miss their general energy around the house.
In this house, there is NO "whoohoos" about them being gone.
Sure, my husband & I have lots of "alone time", but we had 17 years of "alone time" before the girls arrived, so it's not a novelty. We would both rather have them here than not. However, we have to let them fly, to let them find their own ways in life. It stinks, but that's our jobs.
We did visit the younger one last weekend, we'll be seeing the older one in 2 weeks for her 21st birthday, and they'll both be home for a few days for Thanksgiving.

Oh my goodness, I understand!! 2 of my babies are halfway across the world from me, one is married and the other is doing well where he is working. My middle boy turned 18, I am no rush for him to move out. I am clinging to the time I still have my youngest here. We talk once a week with the kids not here, and we watch Monk with my oldest boy. It's not fulfilling like having them here to hug and see their beautiful smiles, but it's so much better than no contact. I will for sure take what they are willing to give. *hugs*
